Keystone Scholars: Keystone Central Foundation, CCEP kick off Youth Leadership program

By From Staff Reports 3 min read

LOCK HAVEN -- Keystone Central Foundation and the Clinton County Economic Partnership (CCEP) kicked off a new Youth Leadership partnership with Keystone Scholars through a Leadership & Team Building Day at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven. The experience provided Keystone Central School District high school students from Central Mountain and Bucktail with an opportunity to build relationships, strengthen their leadership skills and step outside their comfort zones.

Established in 1988, the Keystone Central Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to supporting students in the Keystone Central School District. The Keystone Scholars program started several years ago by Jeff and Linda Mapstone. It is intended to provide mentoring, support, and career/college readiness opportunities to students in the district who may face barriers for post-secondary education or career readiness. The program was further expanded in 2025 with a grant from the Croda Foundation and mentors.

The new Youth Leadership program is one example of this community collaboration, bringing together the Keystone Central Foundation, CCEP, Leadership Clinton County, Commonwealth University-Lock Haven and Croda mentors to provide students with meaningful leadership and personal development experiences.

The Leadership & Team Building Day was designed to challenge students to work together, explore their individual leadership potential and develop skills they can carry with them throughout the school year and beyond.

Albert Jones and Heidi Warner from Commonwealth University led the students through an engaging and inspiring day of leadership and team-building activities, encouraging participants to collaborate, communicate and discover their strengths.

The event was organized by Keystone Central Foundation and its board alongside Megan Wheeler of Leadership Clinton County/CCEP, with support from the program's Croda mentors.

The Leadership & Team Building Day is the first of several sessions planned throughout the school year. CCEP and the Keystone Central Foundation will work together to bring students presentations and experiences modeled after those offered through the adult Leadership Clinton County program. These sessions will introduce students to a variety of community resources, organizations, industries and opportunities throughout Clinton County, helping them better understand the community they live in and the opportunities available to them.

"It was exciting to see the students step outside their comfort zones, work together and get a glimpse of the opportunities and experiences that could be ahead of them after high school," said Wheeler.

Leadership Clinton County is proud to support opportunities that help prepare young people to become confident, engaged leaders in their schools, workplaces and communities.

The Keystone Scholars program looks forward to a successful school year and continuing to provide students with meaningful experiences that encourage personal growth, leadership development and community involvement.
