In the Parks

Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.

Morning Bird Walk

HOWARD — Join the park naturalist on a short walk on Saturday, Aug. 2, to explore birds around the Winter Launch area of Bald Eagle State Park. Beginning at 10 a.m., and lasting about one hour, the walk is inviting to all levels of bird watching experience. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Bring your binoculars.

Dragons and Damsels

HOWARD — Come discover more about the amazing lives of dragonflies and damselflies at Bald Eagle State Park on Saturday, Aug. 2. The program begins at 2 p.m., at the Frog Pond, where lifecycles, habits and identification will be discussed, and we will use nets to try to catch and ID some dragons! This will be an on-going, informal program, so visit at any time during the program hours from 2-3:30 p.m.

Parking is available at the Winter Launch to follow the signs to the Frog Pond.

Sunday Stroll

HOWARD — Sunday is a great day for taking a morning stroll at Bald Eagle State Park! Come with the park naturalist on a 1.5-mile guided walk along the foot-bridge loop for a fresh start to the week. Meet at the Hunter Run West Launch Parking Lot at 10 a.m. The stroll should take about one hour.

Monarch Crash Course

HOWARD — Take part in a virtual crash-course all about Monarch butterflies with the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park! Not only will you learn about the life cycle of Monarchs, but you will also discover how to raise butterflies and participate in MonarchWatch’s butterfly tagging citizen science project. Register online on the DCNR Calendar of Events to get the link to join. This program will be held on Microsoft Teams and is free to attend, open to the public and will be online only with no in-person component. The crash course happens on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 12 p.m.

Tree IDs at Little Pine

WATERVILLE — On Friday, Aug. 8, at 3:30 p.m., join the park naturalist to do some “Tree ID” on some of the different tree species in the Lower Picnic Area of Little Pine State Park. There will be a craft at the end. This program will be suited towards families with children, but anyone is welcome to attend. Meet at Pavilion #4.

HYNER RUN — On Saturday, Aug. 9, at 3:30 p.m., join the park naturalist to learn about the different “Trees” in Hyner Run State Park. There will be a craft at the end. This program will be suited towards families with children, but anyone is welcome to attend. Meet at the pool.

CCC at

Hyner Run

HYNER — On Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m., at Hyner Run State Park, join the park naturalist and learn about the “CCC of Hyner Run,” and the work they did in the 1930s and 1940s in the area, the culture in these camps and how it prepared some to be well-disciplined World War II veterans. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Please bring a lawn chair.
