Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Fly-fishing for kids
COBURN -- Do you know a child ages 7-12 years old interested in learning to fly fish? Join park staff at Poe Valley State Park on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as we go over the basics of fly fishing from the rod itself, to a few knots to get you started, to the flies we use. We'll play a couple games to get some casting practice in. And if time allows, we may get time to go fishing on the lake.
The program will go on in the rain, but thunderstorms will cause cancellation. This program is FREE, and all equipment will be provided. If you have equipment of your own, you are more than welcome to bring it. Registration is required, only eight spots available, and each child must register separately. Nature Journaling Club
HOWARD -- Join Autumn Hanley, Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Trainee, for a Nature Journaling session on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m., at pavilion 6 near the beach area. We will be outdoors for the entirety of the session, rain or shine (we can shelter from the rain under the pavilion, as needed). Be sure to bring your nature journal and art supplies!

Walk with the Naturalist
HOWARD -- Join the Bald Eagle State Park Naturalist for a short, leisurely paced guided hike on the foot-bridge loop on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. During the walk, you will have a chance to ask the Naturalist any questions you have about the flora and fauna at BESP The walk is about 1.5 miles long and fairly flat. It could potentially be muddy in some areas so please dress for the weather. We will meet in the Hunter Run West Boat Launch Parking Lot for the one hour hike.
Archery for Beginners
HOWARD -- Try your hand at archery at Bald Eagle State Park on Friday, Sept. 26, from 6-7:30 p.m. Participants will get a chance to learn all about archery and also get an opportunity to shoot a few arrows. Pre-registration is REQUIRED to participate. Register online on the DCNR Calendar of Events page before Sept. 24.
Participants must be 12 years old, and those under age 18 must have a parent/guardian present for the program duration. Participants and guardians must sign a waiver.
Owl Prowl
HOWARD -- Join the park naturalist on Friday, Sept. 26, at 8:30 p.m., as we try to communicate with birds of the night! After learning about owl adaptations and owls of Pa., we will try to find owls in the park! Please dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. We will be meeting at Pavilion 5, on Skyline Drive.
Archery
WATERVILLE -- Join the Park Educator and get an intro course in archery basics. All equipment will be provided. The course will be offered at Little Pine State Park on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1-5 p.m. Meet at the Archery Range in the northern part of the park.
Black Forest Ultra Race
NORTH BEND -- One of the toughest 100k trail ultras in the northeast is being held at Hyner Run State Park Oct. 4-5. This is not a park led event. Visit www.blackforestultra.com for details.
Autumn leaves
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m., come to Little Pine State Park and enjoy looking at some of the different trees and "Autumn Leaves," and learn what magic goes on for the leaves to change color. Meet at Pavilion #4 (Lower Picnic Area of Little Pine State Park).
CCC of Little Pine
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, join the park naturalist and learn about the "CCC of Little Pine," and about the work the Civilian Conservation Corps did in the 1930s and 1940s in the area, the culture in these camps, and how it prepared some to be well-disciplined World War II veterans. Meet at the amphitheater.
