Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Old Fashioned Skills
PHILIPSBURG -- Black Moshannon State Park offers a variety of Old-Fashioned Skills that may be useful for you to learn. Environmental Education Specialist (EES) Michelle will be showing the basics of two useful skills this month.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, beginning at 1 p.m., you can learn how to make a salve with beeswax. Limited to 12 people, pre-registration is required for this program.
Natural Ornaments and Holiday Crafts
HOWARD -- The holidays are just around the corner, and we are making our own ornaments and cards out of natural items and conventional craft supplies at Bald Eagle State Park. This program is suitable for all ages, come anytime during the program hours of 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, to participate. Pre-registration is not required for this program. Meet at the ELC below the Main Park Office.
Homeschool Day
PHILIPSBURG -- On Thursday, Dec. 11, you can discover the adaptations of birds at Black Moshannon State Park. You will make a bird out of craft supplies that has unique features that would solve the given scenario. This program is geared toward students ages 6-10, but anyone is welcome to attend. The program begins at 1 p.m. and is limited to 15 people. Pre-registration is required.
Geminids Meteor Shower Watch
PHILIPSBURG -- The Geminids Meteor Shower is known to produce up to 150 meteors per hour! Watch for the meteors over Black Moshannon Lake on Saturday, Dec. 13, while learning interesting facts about meteors. Meet at Boat Launch #2 at 6:30 p.m. on the West Side Road. Dress warm for the evening, outdoor program. This program will be cancelled if complete cloud cover or in case of inclement weather.
Little Naturalists
HOWARD -- Join the park naturalist in the Environmental Learning Center at Bald Eagle State Park on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 10-11:30 a.m., for a calm, indoor program designed specifically for young children, ages six months to five years. Little ones will be free to explore conventional toys, games, crafts and natural objects at their own pace. Crafts, puzzles, coloring and nature related educational materials will also be available for older children. Coffee will be available for caregivers!
