Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Geminids Meteor Shower Watch
PHILIPSBURG -- The Geminids Meteor Shower is known to produce up to 150 meteors per hour! Watch for the meteors over Black Moshannon Lake on Saturday, Dec. 13, while learning interesting facts about meteors. Meet at Boat Launch #2 at 6:30 p.m. on the West Side Road. Dress warm for the evening, outdoor program. This program will be cancelled if complete cloud cover or in case of inclement weather.
Little Naturalists
HOWARD -- Join the park naturalist in the Environmental Learning Center at Bald Eagle State Park on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 10-11:30 a.m., for a calm, indoor program designed specifically for young children, ages six months through five years. Little ones will be free to explore conventional toys, games, crafts and natural objects at their own pace. Crafts, puzzles, coloring and nature related educational materials will also be available for older children. Coffee will be available for caregivers!
Natural Ornaments
HOWARD -- The holidays are just around the corner, and you can make your own ornaments and cards from natural items and conventional craft supplies. Michele, the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park, can help with making the ornaments during the program on Friday, Dec. 19, from 10-11:30 a.m. Registration is required by Dec. 17, and can be done on the park's DCNR website or by calling the park office at 814-625-2775.
Beaver Pond Hike
PHILIPSBURG -- On Sunday, Dec. 21, take a 2-mile hike to see a beaver pond and an artesian spring on the winter solstice! This trail at Black Moshannon State Park does have roots and rocks on it, so wear appropriate footwear and dress for the outdoor temperatures. This program will be cancelled if the trail is icy. Meet at Boat Launch #3 on West Side Road at 1 p.m. to begin the hike.
Ursids Meteor Shower Watch
PHILIPSBURG -- Join the park naturalist on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m. to watch for the Ursids Meteor Shower over Black Moshannon Lake! This small meteor shower produces 5-10 meteors per hour. Meet at Boat Launch #2 on West Side Road for the two hour program. Dress warm for the outdoor temperatures! This program will be cancelled if complete cloud cover or inclement weather.
Winter Bird Walk
HOWARD -- After a bit of feeder watching at the ELC at Bald Eagle State Park, we will take a short walk to the Marina to view the birds that call the park home. The walk on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 9:30 a.m. will take place on flat terrain and will be about a mile in length. Please dress for the weather. Binoculars will be loaned out on a first-come, first-serve basis, so bring yours if you have them.
