In the Parks

Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.

Ice Candles

PHILIPSBURG — Learn to make an ice candle at Black Moshannon State Park on Saturday, Jan. 10. The candles will be made with ice from the lake at the park, if it’s still frozen and available.

Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 people. The program starts at 1 p.m.

Little Naturalists Program

HOWARD — Join the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 10-11:30 a.m., for a self-led, open-ELC program for calm, indoor activities designed specifically for young children (ages six months to five years). Little ones will be free to explore conventional toys, games, crafts and natural objects at their own pace. Crafts, puzzles, coloring and nature related educational materials will also be available for older siblings/adults.

The Little Naturalists Program will also be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 10-11:30 a.m.

Monarch Butterflies

Virtually

HOWARD — Learn more about the Monarch Butterfly in a virtual program offered by Bald Eagle State Park on Jan. 14, 2026. Join the park naturalist every Wednesday in January to learn about the natural world! Programs will occur virtually on Microsoft Teams. Pre-registration is required on the DCNR Calendar of Events. The program link will be sent in a confirmation email following registration. The virtual program will run from 12-12:30 p.m. and will cover the lifecycle, conservation and ecology of the Monarch butterfly! We will also briefly discuss raising butterflies at home and participating in Project MonarchWatch.

Bird Adaptations

PHILIPSBURG — Black Moshannon State Park is offering a Bird Adaptations Homeschool Day on Friday, Jan. 16. During the program, students will discover the adaptations of birds, and then create a bird using craft supplies that has unique features that would solve the given scenario. This program is geared toward ages 6-10, but anyone is welcome to attend. Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 people. The program begins at 1 p.m.

Invasive Species

HOWARD — Join Bald Eagle State Park’s naturalist every Wednesday in January to learn about the natural world! Programs will occur virtually on Microsoft Teams. Pre-registration is required on the DCNR Calendar of Events.

On Jan. 21, at noon, learn what an invasive species is, how they affect our environment and tips to prevent their spread. We will also be discussing some of the most notable invasive species in Pa.

Fun in the Snow

PHILIPSBURG — Black Moshannon State Park is offering a Fun Snow Day that will be filled with activities for all ages.

Enjoy Saturday, Jan. 24, outdoors with family and friends at the park. Try out ice mini-golf and bowling on the lake. Take a hike to see the wild animals in the park. Snowshoes, cross-country skis and ice skates will be available to borrow if conditions allow. Be sure to dress warmly (and bring extra warm/dry clothes just in case.)

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be ice mini golf, ice bowling, curling, ice skating, broom ball, build a sculpture, sled riding, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing activities. Meet at the warming hut by the boat rental.

From 10:30-11 a.m. you can stop by the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) to learn to make fake snow that you can take home with you.

From 11 a.m. until noon you can enjoy a winter wildlife hike. Meet at the ELC and take the trek to see the wildlife in the park.

From 1-1:45 p.m. another winter hike is planned to identify the weeds of winter. Meet at the ELC.

More programs and activities may be added to the day’s schedule. Programs are subject to change depending on winter conditions. Liability forms will need to be signed by an adult for any loaner equipment. If there isn’t any snow or ice, the event will be rescheduled for Feb. 10, and other programs may be scheduled for this day.

Owls of PA

HOWARD — Join the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist every Wednesday in January to learn about the natural world! Programs will occur virtually on Microsoft Teams. Pre-registration is required on the DCNR Calendar of Events.

Whooooooo wants to learn about owls?! The program on Jan. 28 will discuss owl adaptations, ecology and the owl species that are native to Pa. The program begins at 12 p.m.
