In the Parks
Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Beaver Pond Hike
PHILIPSBURG — Take a two-mile hike to see a beaver pond at Black Moshannon State Park on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. until noon. Discover interesting facts about these large rodents, then enjoy a leisurely stroll through the forest. Meet at Boat Launch #3 on West Side Road.
Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the outdoor temperatures.
Plant ID Walks
HOWARD — Join a forestry extension educator for a relaxed, guided walk through a scenic Bald Eagle State Park as you explore the diversity of common forest plants and learn to recognize their key identifying features. Designed for beginners and those looking to refresh their skills, this engaging experience offers time to ask questions, observe fine details and deepen your connection to the forest. The walk will cover up to 0.5 miles on gentle paths, with restrooms available nearby. Meet at Pavilion 6. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes.
The walks are planned for Thursday, March 12, at two times — from 2-3:30 p.m. and again from 4:30-6 p.m.
Register by March 10 at 11:45 p.m. Registration is not required but is appreciated.

Wildlife Watch
PHILIPSBURG — On Saturday, March 14, at Black Moshannon State Park, you will get the chance to view wildlife, waterfowl and birds of prey using a spotting scope. From 9-11 a.m., meet at the observation deck on the bog trail to look for wildlife, such as migrating waterfowl and birds of prey. This program will be cancelled if it is snowing or raining.
Photo Scavenger Hunt
PHILIPSBURG — On Saturday, March 21, bring a camera or your phone and get your scavenger hunt list at the Black Moshannon State Park Office. Take pictures of the items throughout the park, then return for a Smokey Bear prize! The photo scavenger hunt runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Nature Journaling Club
HOWARD — The Bald Eagle Nature Journaling Club will be meeting on Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Bald Eagle State Park. This event is free to the public. The session for March will be indoors in the Environmental Learning Center (ELC). They will have an introduction to nature journaling, perfect for beginners or a nice refresher for experienced nature journal keepers.
Bring your nature journal and journaling supplies to this meeting. Organizers also recommend a water bottle. Camp chairs will not be needed at this session.
Beeswax
PHILIPSBURG — On Sunday, March 22, from 1-2:30 p.m., at Black Moshannon State Park, you will learn how beeswax is made and how it has been used throughout history. We will make a dog paw balm (which you could use, if you don’t have a dog). This program is recommended for ages 8 and older and is limited to 12 people. Pre-registration is required.
