In the Parks
Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Summerfest 2026
MIFFLINBURG — Celebrate the beginning of summer at Raymond B. Winter State Park’s annual Summerfest! On Saturday, June 20, from noon to 4 p.m., various educational displays and activities will be available from PA State Parks and Forests, PA Fish and Boat Commission, local environmental organizations and more!
Drop by the Learning Center at 2 p.m. to learn about some incredible insects with Ryan the Bug Man! Try out a kayak or search for the geocaches in the park. Jump in Halfway Run to learn about aquatic animals with Susquehanna University or step back in time and visit some of our historical booths to celebrate America’s 250th!
Stream Stomp
COBURN — Put on your critter catching shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and join the park naturalist at Poe Valley State Park on Saturday, June 20, as we check out what macroinvertebrates call Big Poe Creek home! Meet at the amphitheatre at 12:30 p.m.
What’s the Buzz?
COBURN — Bees are everywhere! But how much do you really know about them? About the structure of their beehive? How about what they do for us? Come to Poe Valley State Park on Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m., where we’ll be talking about some of the different types of bees we like to have around, how they’re keeping us alive and how we can help them! Meet at the amphitheatre.
Father’s Day Photo Scavenger Hunt
COBURN — Kids, grab your dads and a camera or cell phone for this modern scavenger hunt at Poe Valley State Park on Father’s Day Sunday, June 21, beginning at 10 a.m. Find the items listed, take a photo and report back to the park naturalist for prizes! Meet at the amphitheatre.
Art in the Park
COBURN — Feeling artsy? Or maybe you just want to know a little more about the Rainbow Trout? Join in on Sunday, June 21, at 1:30 p.m., at Poe Valley State Park, as we learn how to draw a Rainbow Trout and talk some common fish knowledge! Meet at the Park’s Beach House Breezeway.
Nature’s Villains
HOWARD — They aren’t quite evil stepmothers or sea witches… but they’re villains nonetheless! Join the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park on Thursday, June 25, at 10 a.m., for a short walk to learn about nature’s villains. We are going to discuss poison ivy, deer ticks, invasive species and more! Please dress for the weather. Meet at Pavilion 6 in the beach area.
Berry Hike
HOWARD — Dig out those old baskets and ice cream buckets — we’re going on a berry hike! Join the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park on Friday, June 26, at 5 p.m., to look for black raspberries and blackberries and learn about foraging in Pa. Expect to hike on relatively flat terrain for a distance of approximately 1.5 miles. We will stay on the trails, but long pants and bug repellant are recommended to venture off the sides of trails into the taller vegetation (as you see fit). All ages are welcome, but please bring your own bucket to hold berries.
Family Firefly Fun
HOWARD — Whether you call them fireflies or lightning bugs, these unique insects are a sign of summer in Pa! Join the park naturalist on Friday, June 26, at the Russell P. Letterman Campground Amphitheater of Bald Eagle State Park to learn the basics about our state insect. We will discuss their natural history and learn how fireflies light up the night. This will be an on-going, informal program, so visit any time during the program hours from 8-9:30 p.m.
Meet the Mammals
COBURN — Want to learn more about the raccoons that could visit your campsite at night during your stay at Poe Valley State Park? How about the elusive bobcat? (Don’t worry, she won’t be visiting your site, but it’s still fun to learn about her!) Come find out about these critters and more as we feel their pelts and skulls! This program begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at the park’s amphitheater.
Rocking it at Hyner
NORTH BEND — Join the park naturalist on Friday, June 26, at 3:30 p.m., to learn about and to explore some of the rocks found at Hyner Run State Park. There will also be a craft. The program will take about one hour. Meet beside the pool.
