In the Parks
Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
SMART Fishing
WATERVILLE — Want to introduce your children to the sport of fishing? This “SMART Fishing” program at Little Pine State Park on Saturday, July 4, at 3:30 p.m., is geared toward teaching others to be responsible anglers. Meet at the boat launch of Little Pine Reservoir.
Local Lore
WATERVILLE — Tis the 250th birthday of America. On Saturday, July 4, at 8 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, come on out and learn some of the “Local Lore” that contributed to the nation’s history, including, but not limited to, the Fair Play Men, different towns in the area and the CCC. Meet at the amphitheater.
Pennsylvania Trivia
MIFFLINBURG — Test your Pa. knowledge at our themed trivia night on July 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. during R. B. Winter State Park’s PA Heritage Weekend. Gather up your family and friends to learn about all things Pennsylvania – history, symbols, iconic people or places…you never know what might pop up! The first place winner(s) will receive RB Winter prizes donated from the Friends of RB Winter! Meet at the Whispering Pines Amphitheater (across from Playfield/Campground). In case of rain, this program will be moved into the Environmental Learning Center.
Swamp White Oak
HOWARD — Want to know the history of Bald Eagle State Park and how it connects to the largest Swamp White Oak in Pennsylvania? Meet at the Skyline Trailhead at 10 a.m. on July 4, for an hour dedicated to our very own record-breaking tree. The hike navigates a small incline that could be muddy at times.
Pollinators
NORTH BEND — On Friday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m., stop by the poolside and learn about some of the “Pollinators” you may see at Hyner Run State Park this time of year. There will also be a craft. Meet at the pool.
Evening Birding
NORTH BEND — On Friday, July 10, at 8 p.m., join the naturalist for some “Evening Birding” at Hyner Run State Park. Topics will include the different birds that live at Hyner Run and how to identify them. Feel free to bring your own binoculars or borrow some of the park’s gear. Also, feel free to bring other birding gear. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool.
Pollinators in the Garden
WATERVILLE — On Saturday, July 11, at Little Pine State Park, come by the Environmental Learning Center of Pennsylvania to learn what flowers are coming up this time of year in our Pollinator Garden, and some of the pollinators you may see during the program “Pollinators in the Garden.” Feel free to stop on in any time between 3:30-4:30 p.m. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center at the park office.

WATERVILLE — On Saturday, July 11, at 8 p.m., join the Little Pine State Park naturalist for some “Evening Birding on the Lake Shore Trail.” Topics will include the different birds that live at Little Pine and how to identify them. Monarch Moment
CROSS FORK — Join the park educator at the Ole Bull State Park amphitheater on Saturday, July 11, at 3 p.m. to learn about the colorful butterfly known as the Monarch. Bring your sketch pads along and learn how to draw a Monarch.
Art in the Park
RENOVO — It’s that time of year! Black and orange are starting to appear and are fluttering around. Join the Kettle Creek State Park educator at the nature center on Sunday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m., to learn about this colorful critter — the monarch. We’ll learn how far they migrate, what they eat, the difference between male and female Monarchs and much, much more. As part of our Art in the Park series, we’ll also be drawing a Monarch step by step, along the way!

COBURN — Feeling artsy? Or maybe you just want to know a little more about Opossums? Join us at Poe Paddy State Park on Sunday, July 12, at 1:30 p.m., as we learn how to draw an Opossum and talk common opossum knowledge! Bring your sketch pad along to learn how to draw an opossum during the afternoon.
