In the parks
Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Pollinators in the Garden
WATERVILLE — On Saturday, July 11, at Little Pine State Park, come by the Environmental Learning Center of Pennsylvania to learn what flowers are coming up this time of year in our Pollinator Garden, and some of the pollinators you may see during the program “Pollinators in the Garden.” Feel free to stop on in any time between 3:30-4:30 p.m. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center at the park office.
Evening Birding on the Lake Shore Trail
WATERVILLE — On Saturday, July 11, at 8 p.m., join the Little Pine State Park naturalist for some “Evening Birding on the Lake Shore Trail.” Topics will include the different birds that live at Little Pine and how to identify them. Feel free to bring your own binoculars or borrow a limited amount of ours. Also, feel free to bring other birding gear. Meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail’s kiosk at the dam
Monarch Moment
CROSS FORK — Join the park educator at the Ole Bull State Park amphitheater on Saturday, July 11, at 3 p.m. to learn about the colorful butterfly known as the Monarch. Bring your sketch pads along and learn how to draw a Monarch.
Art in the Park
RENOVO — It’s that time of year! Black and orange are starting to appear and are fluttering around. Join the Kettle Creek State Park educator at the nature center on Sunday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m., to learn about this colorful critter — the monarch. We’ll learn how far they migrate, what they eat, the difference between male and female Monarchs and much, much more. As part of our Art in the Park series, we’ll also be drawing a Monarch step by step, along the way!

COBURN — Feeling artsy? Or maybe you just want to know a little more about Opossums? Join us at Poe Paddy State Park on Sunday, July 12, at 1:30 p.m., as we learn how to draw an Opossum and talk common opossum knowledge! Bring your sketch pad along to learn how to draw an opossum during the afternoon.
Birdsong Bingo
COBURN — Curious about those birds singing around the park? Or maybe even some of those in your backyard at home? Come out to Poe Valley State Park on Friday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m., and learn some of our common bird songs we hear here in Pa., then play some Bingo to review what you’ve learned! Meet at the amphitheater.
Colonial Garden Tour
HOWARD — Join the park naturalist on Friday, July 17, from 10 a.m. until noon, in our Native Plant Garden and Colonial Garden at Bald Eagle State Park! In celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, we have planted a sample colonial garden containing plants that would have been used during the Revolutionary War period and earlier. We will give 15-30 minute tours of our small Colonial Garden on rotation all throughout the program period. The group will also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of native species in our area and discuss some plants that are part of the garden collection.
If participants want to volunteer, they can assist in maintaining our Native Plant Garden by weeding, planting, mulching or generally helping with any tasks needed to keep the garden healthy and looking beautiful. Feel free to bring hand trowels, weeders or whatever tools you feel comfortable using. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center below the Main Park Office.
Frog Pond Fun
HOWARD — Join the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park on Saturday, July 18, to discover the diverse species found at our pond such as frogs, tadpoles, salamanders and insects and how they benefit the world around us! Participants will have the opportunity to catch and ID critters that live in the Frog Pond. All nets and materials will be provided. Stop by anytime during the program timeframe from 10-11:30 a.m.
