Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Morning Bird Walk
HOWARD -- The early birder sees the birds at Bald Eagle State Park! Experience an unpredictable morning of bird watching on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m., and become acquainted with birds that migrate through or inhabit central Pa. Binoculars will be available to loan on a first-come, first-serve basis, or you can bring your own. All levels of birding experience are welcome. Meet at the Winter Launch Parking Lot for the one hour walk.
Garden Tour and Club
HOWARD -- Join the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist in our Native Plant Garden and Colonial Garden on Friday, Aug. 21! In celebration of America's 250th Anniversary, we have planted a sample colonial garden containing plants that would have been used during the Revolutionary War period and earlier. We will give tours of our small Colonial Garden all throughout the program period, so come anytime from 10-11 a.m. The group will also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of native species in Pa., and discuss some plants that are part of the garden collection.
If participants want to volunteer, they can assist in maintaining our Native Plant Garden by weeding, planting, mulching or generally helping with any tasks needed to keep the garden healthy and looking beautiful. Feel free to bring hand trowels, weeders or whatever tools you feel comfortable using. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center, below the Main Park Office.
Birds of Hyner Run
NORTH BEND -- Join the naturalist on Friday, Aug. 21, to learn more about everyone's feathery friends at Hyner Run State Park. Topics will include the different birds that live at Hyner Run, how to identify them and some features that make them unique. There will also be a craft. The program runs from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Meet beside the pool.
CCC of Hyner Run
NORTH BEND -- Join the Hyner Run State Park naturalist on Friday, Aug. 21, and learn about the work the Civilian Conservation Corps did in the 1930's and 1940's in the area, the culture in these camps and how it prepared some to be well-disciplined World War II veterans. The program runs from 8-9 p.m. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool and please bring a lawn chair.
Afternoon Birding on Lake Shore Trail
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3:30 p.m., join the Little Pine State Park naturalist for some "Afternoon Birding on Lake Shore Trail." Topics will include the different birds that live at Little Pine and how to identify them. A limited number of binoculars will be on hand. Please bring any other birding gear if desired. Meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail at the kiosk at the dam.
CCC of Little Pine
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, Aug. 22, at 8 p.m., join the Little Pine State Park naturalist and learn about the work of the "CCC of Little Pine," the culture in CCC camps, and how the CCC prepared some to be well-disciplined World War II veterans. Meet at the amphitheater.
Nature Journaling Club
HOWARD -- Join Autumn Knepp, Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, for a topic-focused Nature Journaling session at Bald Eagle State Park on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon! We will have an introduction to nature journaling, perfect for beginners, or a nice refresher for experienced nature journal keepers. Bring your nature journal and favorite journaling supplies to this meeting. If you don't want to bring art supplies, we will also have some pens, markers, crayons, etc. to share, along with some paper that can be spliced into your personal journal later. All ages and artistic abilities are welcome!

Marvelous Monarchs
HOWARD -- Join in on a crash-course all about Monarch butterflies with the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m.! We will learn about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, discover tips on how to raise butterflies at home, look for caterpillars and try to tag some wild butterflies with Monarch Watch tags (if we can catch them!).
This program is totally free to attend, all ages are welcome. Meet at the Frog Pond, which is about a 0.25 mile walk down a flat/grass trail from Main Park Road.The closest parking would be at the Winter Launch.
