Death on Interstate 80

LAMAR -- One man is dead following a high speed chase along Interstate 80 West, state police at Lamar said.

Troopers initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 178 in Lamar Township at about 10 p.m. when Daryl J. Gakin, 34, of Spearfish, S.D., failed to stop his 2004 Nissan Titan, police said.

The chase continued in Marion Township, Centre County where Gakin's vehicle left the roadway and struck the end of a guiderail before his vehicle rolled multiple times and coming to rest off the roadway, police said.

Gakin was not wearing his seatbelt and was found outside of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on scene by medical personnel, police said.

Drug or alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the incident, police said.

Identity theft

FLEMINGTON -- Betty Lamey, 55, of Flemington was the victim of identity theft when her social security number was used to file for unemployment, state police at Lamar said.

Theft by deception

LAMAR - At 1:48 p.m. on June 22, state police at Lamar investigated a report of theft by deception that occurred on Long Run Road in Lamar Township. According to police, a theft by deception occurred via Facebook marketplace involving a scam that utilized actual real estate and apartment listings in the area in order to obtain money through online payment apps. A female, 57, of Mill Hall, fell victim to the scam and lost $700 according to police. Police informed everyone in the area and asked them to be aware of the possible scams. The investigation is on-going.
