Mail theft
WILLIAMSPORT -- The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Wednesday that Jessica Stover, 27, of Millheim, was sentenced on Aug. 3, 2021, by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Matthew W. Brann to one year of probation for theft of mail. Stover was also ordered to pay $350 in restitution and a $300 fine.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Stover entered a guilty plea in March 2021 to theft of mail matter by a Postal Employee where she admitted to opening greeting cards and other mail at a U.S. Post Office sorting facility for mail destined for students at Pennsylvania State University.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur prosecuted the case.
Theft by deception
WOODWARD TOWNSHIP -- Woodward Township Police investigated a theft by deception on Aug. 4. It was reported by a local resident of the area that they hired and paid for a general contractor. The contractor was tasked with completing a remodeling job, they told police. However, the contractor started the work but allegedly never completed the job and kept the money. The investigation is ongoing.
Mass retail theft
MILL HALL -- State police at Lamar received a report from Lowe's Home Improvement in Mill Hall involving mass retail theft. According to police, three unidentified individuals entered the home improvement store and while inside, they made four fraudulent purchases. The purchases were made using "Global Cash Cards" police said in their report.
The individuals then walked past all final points of sale thus allegedly depriving Lowe's of $6,504.99. Police said that they continued to another Lowe's, at which they returned some of the stolen merchandise for a cash refund. The three individuals have successfully made several fraudulent purchases and returns to Lowe's across the state according to police. The vehicle in which they operate in is a white 2021 Jeep Compass bearing IA registration: KBX071. If anyone has information involving the trio they are to contact the PSP Lamar Barracks at (570) 726-600 and reference the incident number: PA2021-1056489.
DUI alleged
LAMAR -- State police at Lamar arrested a woman for DUI on July 3.
According to police, Laurie Fredericks, 51, of Linden, was pulled over in her 2017 Kia Sorento for suspected DUI. Charges will be filed pending the toxicology results.
Corruption of minors
LOCK HAVEN / FLEMINGTON -- Two incidents of corruption of minors were reported to state police at Lamar.
Between June 1 and June 30, a juvenile victim from Lock Haven received inappropriate sexual images by an unknown suspect, according to police. The suspect then requested the same be sent back. The investigation is ongoing.
On July 20, a juvenile victim from Flemington received nude photos from an unknown suspect via Snapchat police reported. The unknown suspect in turn allegedly received nude photos from the victim. The investigation is ongoing.
Car crash results in injury
LAMAR -- State police at Lamar investigated a car accident which resulted in injuries on July 15. According to police, the accident occurred as Ronald Gummo, 80, of Mill Hall, entered the roadway from Dotterer's Road onto Jacksonville Road in Porter Township. He allegedly struck another vehicle operated by Traci Harris, 46, of Lock Haven.
Police said that Gummo failed to make sure the roadway was clear before turning left resulting with Gummo striking Harris with his 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. After being struck by Gummo, Harris's 2007 Cadillac CTS slid sideways then went up an embankment which resulted in the vehicle to roll over said police in their report. The vehicle came to a final rest on its roof on Jacksonville Road.
Harris was transported to Lock Haven Hospital for suspected minor injuries by Goodwill Hose Co. ambulance. Also assisting police on the scene were Lamar Township fire police who helped control traffic.
Boalsburg woman
killed in crash
POTTER TOWNSHIP -- A car accident resulted in the death of a Boalsburg woman.
Elizabeth Biddle, 20, was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Mt. Back Road in Potter Township, according to Centre County coroner Scott Sayers. The vehicle allegedly entered the intersection with General Potter Highway where it struck the side of a tractor trailer.
The coroner said Biddle was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was conducted and found her death to be a result of head trauma and the manner of death was an accident, he said. State police at Rockview are investigating the accident.
