WASD releases official statement on principal arrested on sex assault charges

WILLIAMSPORT — A Williamsport Area School District spokesperson released the following statement concerning high school Principal Roger Freed’s arrest on several counts of sexual assault-related charges Wednesday afternoon:
“In light of the charges filed yesterday against Williamsport Area High School principal Dr. Roger Freed, the Williamsport Area School District wishes to provide an official response.
“As per school policy and procedure, Dr. Freed is suspended from his position with pay. The school district is cooperating with authorities as they continue their investigation.
“The safety and well-being of our students is our first priority. Should any student wish to speak to a counselor, counseling services will be available by appointment only by calling 570-323-8411.”
Freed is alleged to have carried on a sexual relationship with a Williamsport student from 2015 through this past April, according to state police.
He was arrested on over 30 felony charges for the allegations, which were filed Monday.
Following his arraignment before District Judge Christian Frey, Freed was released on $175,000 intense supervised bail. He will be required to wear an ankle monitor at all times. He is also prohibited from having any contact with the victim or unsupervised contact with any minors.
Freed was hired as a math teacher at Williamsport Area High School in 2011 and became secondary special education coordinator for the district in 2015. Freed was also assistant principal at Jackson Primary, and most recently served as ninth-grade principal, according to the school district’s website.
