JERSEY SHORE -- A neighbor with a portable extinguisher was credited with helping douse a kitchen fire that erupted late Saturday afternoon on Seminary Street in Jersey Shore, temporarily displacing a family, according to Joseph Mitchell, deputy fire chief with Citizens Hose Company.
Heavy smoke was filling up the home at 244 Seminary St. when Lycoming Regional police and borough firefighters pulled up on the scene about 4:20 p.m., but the neighbor's fast actions stopped a critical situation from getting much worse, Mitchell said. No injuries were reported, he added.
With one hose, firefighters put the fire out in a matter of minutes, and used exhaust fans to clear all the smoke from the house. The fire started in the oven and scorched overhead cupboards, the chief said. Damage was under $5,000, and Mitchell believed the family, now staying with relatives, should be back in their house in a matter of days.
