MILL HALL -- The origin of a house fire at 119 Dewey Street in Mill Hall in December was an overheated outlet, according to a report from Mill Hall Borough Police.
At 7:35 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2023, a house fire was reported at the home, which prompted a response from multiple fire departments from Clinton and Lycoming counties, police said.
The home sustained extensive interior damage, police said.
The investigation revealed the cause of the fire was electrical, due to an overheated receptacle outlet in the kitchen, police said.
The fire rapidly spread into the living room and then to the stairwell that led to the second floor, causing smoke and heat damage to the upper floors, police reported.
Three dogs and two rabbits perished in the fire despite the efforts of firefighters who tried to rescue them, according to the report.
Fire departments that assisted Mill Hall were Lamar Township, Castanea Township, Lock Haven, Flemington Goodwill Hose, Beech Creek, Jersey Shore and Goodwill EMS.
The homeowner did not have insurance on the home, police said.
