Lock Haven ambulance involved in three-vehicle crash

PHILIP A. HOLMES/FOR THE EXPRESS

The northbound lanes of Route 220 from Pine Creek to Jersey Shore were closed for about two hours following a three-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that involved a Lock Haven ambulance that was en route to UPMC Williamsport with a patient, according to Lycoming Regional police. It did not appear that the patient aboard the ambulance, who was safely secured with straps on a stretcher, was hurt, police said. However, a woman driving a Ford SUV that was involved in the 3:30 p.m. crash was injured and taken by ambulance to an area hospital, police said. Her vehicle was demolished. Police said a truck was reportedly stopped in the right northbound lane when the northbound SUV suddenly hit one of the truck’s tires, went airborne, spun and crashed into the front of the Lock Haven ambulance, which was doing a routine patient transfer from UPMC Lock Haven, meaning that its emergency lights and siren were not activated at the time. A second ambulance was brought to the scene to transfer the patient who was being taken to the hospital, police said. All three vehicles had to be towed.
