Bail denied for alleged Jersey Shore child-sex offender
JERSEY SHORE — Edward D. Mayo, 59, of 117 N. Broad St., Jersey Shore, was arrested Tuesday morning on numerous felony child-sex abuse charges stemming from two separate cases.
One set of charges was filed by Lycoming Regional police, who have accused him of allegedly giving a 17-year-old female marijuana and money in exchange for sexual favors, court records stated.
On at least two occasions between May 1 and Sept.19, Mayo had sexual relations with the teen, police said.
In the criminal complaint, investigators allege Mayo “delivered marijuana on multiple occasions to the girl and a 13-year old boy.”
It is also alleged Mayo “encouraged the girl to become and remain a prostitute” during a four-month period last year.
On one occasion, when Mayo began touching the girl, the minor “started thinking she didn’t want to do this and that she was uncomfortable,” police alleged. The victim clearly told investigators that “she did not want to have sex” with Mayo. However, she went ahead and had sex with him because “in her mind, she wanted the marijuana” that Mayo allegedly offered her.
Investigators also believe that Mayo and the girl smoked marijuana together on occasion.
All these alleged acts took place in Jersey Shore, police said. Mayo has been charged with prostitution, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, unlawful contact with a minor and corrupting the morals of a minor.
The second set of charges against Mayo were filed by a county detective, who has accused him of molesting a girl, a different victim, on three to four occasions between 2015 and 2019 in Williamsport. The victim at the time was “between 5 and 8 years old,” the detective said.
In this case, Mayo is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault, four counts of indecent assault and one count each of rape of a child, unlawful contact with a minor, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, indecent exposure and related offenses.
Following his arraignment before District Judge Denise Dieter, Mayo was committed to the Lycoming County Prison on no bail.
