LOCK HAVEN -- The Clinton County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to area residents of a scam taking place in and around Clinton County.
Sheriff Kerry Stover shared in a statement on Facebook that a fraudster, claiming to be a "deputy" or "officer" with the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, has been demanding money to remove victims from a "Jail Pick-Up List" for failure to attend jury selection.
Several individuals have contacted the office to report the caller, who has, in at least one instance, identified himself as a "Deputy Mercer." No Deputy Mercer is employed within the department.
According to Stover, the caller, who is described as very insistent, requests $3,000 be paid immediately to resolve the issue, directing callers to a source where they can make the payment, often Western Union. The scammer typically instructs callers to remain on the line while the transaction processes.
Stover noted the caller ID will display "Unavailable" or "Restricted" during these calls.
He urged the public never to provide personal information or send payments of this nature over the phone.
"These people are absolutely preying on their potential victims... especially those who fear the threat of going to jail," Stover wrote on the Sheriff's Office's social media.
