Infant evaluated after crash in Centre County

JULIAN — An eight-month-old child was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center last week after a vehicle crashed into an abandoned house along the 600 block of Rattlesnake Pike in Union Township, according to state police.

The driver, Matthew Witmer, 22, of Osceola Mills, was reportedly speeding at the time of the crash, which occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday, April 1.

No injuries were initially reported. However, emergency medical services were called to the scene by Pennsylvania State Police at Rockview to assess the infant passenger. The child was ultimately taken by family members to Mount Nittany Medical Center for further evaluation. According to police, the child was improperly fastened in a car seat but appeared uninjured.

The investigation was prompted by an automated iPhone Crash Detection alert, which automatically places a call to emergency services when it detects an accident. Centre County 911 and PSP Rockview dispatchers contacted Witmer, who allegedly told them that everything was fine.

Police say the crash occurred as Witmer’s 2003 Dodge 1500 was traveling westbound on state Route 504, which they noted has no significant curves, hills or turns. The vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway, striking and damaging a mailbox, before re-entering the road, crossing the center line and entering the oncoming lane of traffic, police reported.

The truck then exited the left side of the road where it hit a pole, which scattered debris throughout the area. Witmer’s vehicle then continued to travel parallel to the roadway where it struck a utility pole support wire before ultimately colliding into an abandoned house, causing significant structural damage, police said.

The Dodge 1500 sustained disabling damage. Neither Witmer nor his other passenger, 22-year-old Thomas Ballantyne, of Osceola Mills, were injured.

Starting at $3.69/week.
