Police: Wrong-way driver admits to drinking before fatal crash on 220

LOCK HAVEN — The Clinton County motorist accused of killing a father and his unborn child in a wrong-way driving accident had a blood alcohol level more than two times the legal limit.

That information and an admission by Dwight L. Meyer that he chose to drive the wrong way on Route 220 in the Lock Haven area instead of pulling onto the shoulder is contained in a state police affidavit made available Monday.

Meyer was charged Friday with third-degree murder in the death of Evan Geisewite, 29, of Loganton, and his unborn child.

His wife, Amanda Geiswite, 28, was 20 weeks pregnant when the accident occurred about 6:20 p.m. on April 9.

She suffered serious injuries, including a broken neck, and was flown to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville, where her unborn child was declared deceased.

Evan Geisewite experienced trauma arrest at the scene and was transported to UPMC Lock Haven, where he was pronounced dead.

Meyer, when interviewed at UPMC Williamsport, where he was taken for treatment of his injuries, told police he had had a fight with his girlfriend in Castanea.

Coming from her residence, he said he took the wrong turn and drove south in the northbound lanes of the four-lane divided highway.

He decided to keep driving in the wrong direction until he reached a crossover for emergency vehicles and did not consider driving on the shoulder as an option, troopers said he told them.

A dash camera video obtained from another vehicle showed he passed 12 vehicles driving the wrong way before colliding head-on with the Geisewite car, the arrest affidavit states.

Meyer admitted to consuming four or five cans of 12-ounce beer and using a vape device before driving, the document states. He thought the vape device contained nicotine, not marijuana, he told police.

Laboratory results showed Meyer’s blood alcohol level was .215 percent compared with .08 being the legal limit to drive, the charges state.

Two empty marijuana vape cartridge packages and a vape pen were found in the car, police said.

Besides the two counts of third-degree murder, Meyer is charged with homicide by vehicle, vehicular homicide while under the influence, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an unborn child.

Also, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, 12 counts of recklessly endangering another person, driving under the influence and multiple Vehicle Code violations.
