Hourslong standoff ends with Phillipsburg man dead of self-inflicted injuries

PHILLIPSBURG — A man died of self-inflicted injuries after a standoff with law enforcement in Philipsburg that lasted nearly 12 hours, state police confirmed Thursday.

The man, who has not been officially identified by authorities but has been named by news outlets as Ian M. Stephenson, barricaded himself inside an apartment on North Second Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after police arrived to serve a warrant for child sex abuse charges.

Authorities said Stephenson, 54, informed law enforcement he was armed during attempts to reach him. Despite repeated efforts to get him to disarm and exit the apartment, he refused to comply.

The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team gained entry to the residence shortly after midnight, at which point the suspect was found deceased, according to a release from state police.

Hope Fire Company said East Presqueisle Street was closed between Front and Centre streets, and Second Street between Beaver and Pine streets all of Wednesday evening, and that residents were asked to avoid the area. Fire company units cleared the scene by 12:45 a.m. Thursday, and the roadways were reopened following the incident.
