Boalsburg man, father of ex-NHL player jailed for falsifying records in bankruptcy case

WILLIAMSPORT — A Centre County man, who is the father of a retired National Hockey League player, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for falsifying records in bankruptcy.

U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann made note of the hockey connection Tuesday when he sentenced John J. Johnson, II, 73, of Boalsburg.

His wife, Christina, also has pleaded guilty to the same charge that involves the bankruptcy of the Springfield House Bed and Breakfast. She has not been sentenced.

They admitted in their bankruptcy case not disclosing in 2022 a bank account and making a fictitious filing related to their debtor-in-possession account at M&T Bank.

When Johnson completes his jail sentence he will be on supervised release for one year during which he must perform 30 hours of community service.

He told Brann before the sentence was imposed: “The buck stops right here — me. I’m disappointed in myself.”

Through a series of intentional acts he tried to take advantage of the bankruptcy system, Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur told the judge.

Johnson is awaiting trial in Blair County in another case in which he is facing 37 counts that include theft by deception, bad checks and receiving stolen property.

Brann referenced the hockey connection when he noted in reviewing the presentence report Johnson and a son were estranged because of financial issues.

That son, who played under the name Jack Johnson, declared bankruptcy himself in 2014, six years after the former NHL defenseman granted his parents power of attorney, giving them the authority to manage his earnings.

According to published reports they borrowed more than $15 million against their son’s future earnings and spent it on luxury homes, cars and trips to his games.

Starting at $3.69/week.
