HOWARD — Multiple fire crews from Centre and Clinton counties battled a blaze at a Howard area business Wednesday night into the early morning hours Thursday.

According to reports, a call went out at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday for reports of a building fire along Spearing Street in the borough.

Multiple calls were received by the Centre County Department of Emergency Services, indicating flames showing in G.P. Cabinets in the 200 Block of the roadway.

Smoke billowed from the building throughout the borough and beyond as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

According to reports from the scene, the fire was placed under control by the early morning hours Thursday, with crews remaining to work on hot spots as of 6 a.m.

When an Express reporter arrived on the scene at about 10:30 a.m., fire crews had left the scene, but some remnants of smoke could be seen coming off of the remains of the structure.

As of right now, there is no further information regarding the cause of the fire. A fire marshal was expected to arrive at the fire scene on Thursday.

G.P. Cabinets first opened its doors at the location in 2014. It is believed that close to 40 were employed at the business prior to the devastating fire.

The company builds custom kitchen cabinets made out of a variety of woods along with providing custom stains, paints and glazes for kitchen spaces and more.

The building was commonly known in the area as being the Howard Woolrich plant, employing many in the region until its doors were closed in the mid-1990’s. Wintron Technologies later would occupy the structure, before being occupied by G.P. Cabinets.

The building is owned by Tom Watson. Watson does have insurance on the building.

G.P. Cabinets owner Jim Josefik was leasing the building from Watson.

Starting at $3.69/week.
