Two fatal crashes reported in Centre County
STATE COLLEGE — Two fatal car crashes were reported in Centre County late last week, just days apart, according to local officials.
The first crash took place on Wednesday, June 10 near the intersection of South Allen Street and Easterly Parkway in the area of Sunrise Terrace.
According to a report from the Centre County Coroner’s office, Raina A. Kassoway, 48, of Boalsburg, died as a result of injuries sustained in the one-vehicle rollover crash.
Kassoway was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center following the accident where she was pronounced dead despite extensive resuscitative efforts, the report stated.
The coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on June 11 and determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and chest, with the manner of death ruled accidental.
This crash remained under investigation by the coroner’s office and State College Police Department.
The second fatal crash took place in Ferguson Township on Friday, June 12 at about 10:48 p.m. in the 200 block of Water Street, Pine Grove Mills.
According to Ferguson Township Police, a preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle failed to negotiate a sharp turn on Pine Grove Mountain, causing it to leave the road and travel 150 feet, coming to rest in a drainage ditch.
The lone occupant, a 78-year-old Ohio woman, was flown to UPMC Williamsport.
“Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries,” the report stated.
The driver’s identity has not been released as official work to notify family members.
The crash is still under investigation by FTPD along with Centre County Crash Reconstruction Team. Police were assisted on the scene of the crash by Centre Lifelink EMS and Alpha Fire Company.
