The reminders of Lent

As we go through the Lenten season, we're often so wrapped up in our daily lives, that we go through an entire day without remembering that this is Lent. This isn't the only time that we do this, and it happens with various religious seasons for other faiths also. There's just so much going on each day. It's just who we are, and how busy our lives are.

The main way that I remind myself of important things is to make a list. However, I welcome other reminders, even reminders from others. During this season of Lent I'm glad when I see a draped cross displayed, whether at a church or a home, because it reminds me of the season, and of what Jesus did for us. I also welcome the sight of three crosses, whether in a field along a highway or in a public park, because again, it reminds me of Lent, and that Jesus recognized that we're with him. It also reminds me that he became human to be like us. It emphasizes the humanity of Jesus. In Lent, we need to remember and focus on the fact that Jesus is with us, and us with Jesus, through this journey and always.

In John 12:30-33 we hear... "Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of the world, now the ruler of the world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."... As we think of Lent, we think of the suffering and pain, and we should. It's part of the legacy that Jesus left us. However, we also need to see hope for the future. In this reading we hear that Jesus will draw all people to him. There's that humanity... There are the three crosses… There's a message worth being reminded of... a message of salvation.

The three common Lenten practices can also serve as reminders for us. When we pray, this is a time to remember the importance of our relationship with God. When we fast, whether from favorite foods or even unkind words, we are reminded of the sacrifice made by Jesus for us. When we give of our time and money to those less fortunate, we are reminded of the need to focus on what it means to be Christians. The meaning of Lent is a little different for each of us. We may each see its place in our faith a little different than others would see. We do need to be reminded however, to explore that meaning... and give our faith some attention.

As we continue our individual faith journeys, may we continue to stay the course. May we welcome reminders to do so. May we keep it all simple, and enjoy our relationship with God fully and deeply. May God's peace and comfort be with us all.
