We're in the religious season of Advent. The Christmas season (the 12 days of Christmas) doesn't begin until Dec. 25. During Advent this is a time of reflection... of peace... of waiting... and of love toward others. It's also an excellent time to raise questions about God, and to also look for the answers to those questions.
Those answers come from God, but come through us. This is one way of reaching everyone... through our relationships with each other. This is because we are God's hands in this world. When we help each other, it's really God helping us.
I'm sure that we all get something out of our Bible reading and prayers, but shouldn't we want more? When we join together in worship, Bible studies and prayer, we're helping each other to get to know God better, and to learn His lessons in a better context... I said earlier that I understand the feeling about organized religion, but let's be fair, houses of worship today are so diverse, from new congregation start-ups to 200-year old congregations that have renewed themselves many times over the years.
So many people feel the call to find a church, but don't know what to expect, or are afraid.Well, I encourage you to try attending a church. Perhaps try one convenient to your home. Give it a try and expect to be welcomed! This is the best time of year to go to church. Peace, joy and comfort is what abounds wherever we gather. I suggest you pick a church tomorrow, and just show up. If you're still feeling a bit nervous or shy, look for a Christmas Eve service and blend in with the crowd. I only ask that you keep an open mind to others, and an open heart to God.
As for those of you who have church families, I also encourage you especially to attend church tomorrow and on Christmas Eve. Be sure to also come with open minds toward others and open hearts toward God, because this is how we all strengthen our relationships with God... and be sure to welcome all who walk through that door with you.
The world has changed, people have changed and God's relationship with His people has also changed. Whether you're a lifelong church attendee or someone hearing that distant call or feeling that subtle nudge to find more, this is the time to see how worship together will help your relationship with God. Provide yourself an early Christmas present. Find the answers you may be looking for, by sharing your faith journey... This season of Advent calls us to share the season's peace, love and hope with each other... and there's no better person to share that with, than someone you just met.
