Faith in tough times

Bishop Samuel Gobat (1799-1879) of Jerusalem, told a story during a difficult missionary trip in Africa. He endured persecution and many dangers and became greatly discouraged. He entered a cave, dropped to his knees and poured his heart out to God, crying out about being forgotten and forsaken. After a time, when his eyes became accustomed to the darkness of the cave, he was shocked to notice a Hyena with cubs a few feet away. As the bishop removed himself from the cave and safely went on his way, he said to himself “Surely God who kept me safe from a wild beast will keep me safe from other dangers, too.”

God showed Bishop Gobat that he was indeed present and at work, even when he could not see.

If you are like me, you have had times of discouragement and have even questioned God; Are you still here? Do you still care?

Regardless of our feelings, we can be assured that God’s word is true. In his letter to the Hebrews, Paul reminds us of the promise God gave his people in Deuteronomy 31:6 that the Lord will “never leave or forsake you.”

When life gets tough, focus on Jesus and his love for you that is revealed in the Holy Word of God — the Bible. Next, find a good Christian friend to talk with, if you aren’t already part of a church. And finally, pray: Philippians 4:6-7: Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
