The soul is naturally Christian

Many have noted the growth in interest among young people concerning Christianity. A higher percentage of young Christians demonstrate today an increased devotion to the Faith and the number of converts to Christianity is on the rise. Some are astounded. Some see this as a sign from God. Some look for explanations in the world around them. Some even see this as a fault in the present generation.

The answer is quite simple. God has been at work. And humanity needs God.

The early theologian, Tertullian, wrote around 197 A.D. that the soul is naturally Christian. This is evidenced to us in the fact that even among those who have never encountered Christ, there is a thirst for goodness. Most people want to live in peace regardless of what their leaders say. Most people believe in the power of love and embrace it with all their hearts. Most people are willing to sacrifice for the good of others. And most people are opposed to the contrary, to violence, greed, dishonesty, hate and oppression.

As our society turns away from Christian values, it distances itself more and more from the yearning of our souls. People naturally begin seeking for that which has been lost by society. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit they discover that which they earnestly desire in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

This is nothing new. It has happened repeatedly throughout the course of Christian history. An outstanding example is found in the life altering conversion of St. Francis. In the day of St. Francis there was economic prosperity which gave rise to the same societal influences as are found today. As the son of a rich merchant, Francis had all the luxuries available to a young man but yearned for what he did not know and what the world could not offer. It was this unappeased hunger and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit which caused St. Francis to turn whole-heartedly to God. He turned his back on all that the world had to offer and sought instead what God had to offer. His soul was subsequently fed by the Spirit, and he found the joy and meaning in life which had evaded him.

This is what is happening in our day. May those who seek, find.
