BELLEFONTE -- Thousands of ballots were cast in Centre County on election night.
For the Centre County Board of Commissioners, Incumbent Steven Dershem and newcomer Marie Librizzi on the Republican ballot received 18,501 and 16,135 votes respectively as of 11:59 p.m. election night; incumbents Mark Higgins and Amber Concepcion listed on the Democratic ballot received 20,183 and 19,166 votes respectively.
For the Bellefonte Area School Board of Directors, voters could vote for five individuals. As of 11:59 p.m. election night, the preliminary results showed the following five candidates in the lead.
-- Jennifer Barnhart with 4,405 total votes
-- Kimberly Weaver with 4,356 total votes
-- Tim Kessling with 4,259 total votes
-- Patrick Buck with 4,056 total votes
-- Darrell Sharp with 3,435 total votes
The Bellefonte Borough saw a couple of unopposed races during this election.
Incumbent Douglas Johnson (D/R), for Ward 1, had 558 votes as of 11:59 p.m. election night.
Residents in Ward 2 were able to vote for two candidates -- incumbents Deborah Cleeton (D) and Randy Brachbill (R).
Cleeton had 339 total votes according to preliminary results; Brachbill had 389.
Residents in Ward 3 could only vote for one candidate between incumbent Joanne Tosti-Vasey (D) and newcomer Christopher Morelli (R).
According to preliminary results, Tosti-Vasey had 283 votes and Morelli had 224.
Turnout is typically low during non-presidential elections, the turnout for this election according to preliminary results as of 11:59 p.m. was 39% -- with 39,366 votes cast out of 100,759 total registered voters.
According to the statistics listed on centrecountyvotes.gov as of 11:59 p.m., among those voters were 28,404 election day ballots cast and 10,962 absentee/mail-in ballots cast; mail-in and absentee/mail-in ballots were received and counted on Tuesday night.
