Officials: Three-alarm fire causes extensive damage to 629 E. Main St.; displaces two families
HUNTER SMITH/THE EXPRESS Firefighters and other volunteers can be seen battling a third-alarm structure fire at 629 E. Main St., Lock Haven after 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The fire displaced two families and was deemed under control at about 9 p.m. that night.
LOCK HAVEN — A three-alarm fire along East Main Street in Lock Haven caused extensive damage to a property and displaced two families, according to local officials.
Lock Haven Fire Chief Tyler Wooding released further information about the fire, which cut off traffic in the 600 block of the roadway early Wednesday evening.
According to Wooding, the call went out at 4:18 p.m. for 629 E. Main St.
“Fire units arrived on scene to find fire showing from multiple windows of a two-story building,” Wooding said. “Crews began fire suppression operations while simultaneously conducting a search for any victims.”
Wooding said one victim reportedly jumped from a second floor window to escape.
As conditions continued to worsen and crews worked to dampen the blaze, a second alarm was called and brought firefighters from Dunnstown, Mill Hall, Jersey Shore and Avis.
“Units almost immediately encountered water supply issues due to the frigid temperatures. A third alarm was struck a short time later,” Wooding said.
Fire crews from Flemington, Castanea and Lamar joined to help, he said.
Hours later, at 9:13 p.m., the fire was placed under control.
During this time, multiple residents from neighboring homes were evacuated, according to reporters at the scene.
Wooding said an investigation into the cause of the fire is on-going.
“There were two families living in the building at the time of the fire,” he said.
Though no injuries were reported, Wooding said a family cat and dog were not able to escape the flames.
“The entire building sustained extensive fire damage while neighboring structures sustained moderate damage from radiant heat,” Wooding said.
In total, the fire department estimates about $250,000 worth of damage to the structure.
