Born April 8, 1918 in Melrose MA, she was the daughter of the late Anna (Hansen) and Arthur Wardwell.

Gertrude married Robert Merton Rodgers on Nov. 19, 1934. Robert passed away on April 14, 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Rhine, of Snydertown; a son, Ken Rodgers, of Knoxville, TN; a daughter-in-law, Jayne Rodgers, of Middletown, NY, and a son-in-law, Gene Steele, of Boalsburg. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn S. Steele; two sons, Dennis A. Rodgers and Robert M. Rodgers Jr, and one brother, Arthur Wardwell.

Gertrude was a member of Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church in Lemont and would often spend time at the church helping with the newsletter.

She was an active individual. After her retirement from the Office of Student Aid at Penn State, she traveled with friends through the U.S. and overseas. She enjoyed golfing, was a member of a bowling league for years into her late 80’s, loved playing cards, games and puzzles, did the daily crossword puzzle from the newspaper, and loved to read. She and her daughter, Marilyn, were avid quilters and created dozens of quilts and wall hangings with the group, Super 8 Quilters. They make Linus quilts for children in the hospital and a cancer quilt for the hospital each year.

She loved to watch the birds from her window every day. Gertrude was independent and feisty until she joined the Lord!

A celebration of Gertrude’s life will be held in the summer of 2021, when we can safely gather. The time and place will be announced.
