Mrs. Mary G. Beatty, of Bakersfield, Calif., passed away peacefully on May 30, 2023. She was surrounded by family and friends at the Sage Care home as she ended her life's journey.
She was born the daughter of Charles and Mildred Vilello in Lock Haven, Pa., on June 10, 1929. As one of six children, she was preceded in death by four older siblings, Richard, Ray, Josephine and Fred.
She is survived by her younger sister, Caroline McCullough, of Phoenix, Ariz.
She was a child of The Depression, a teenager during World War II, a military wife and mother during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and mostly a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She married a career Marine enlisted man, George J. Beatty, on her 21st birthday in 1950 in Philadelphia. Mary and George had three sons, Robert (Bob), and twins, George (Gus) and Charles (Chuck).
Mary moved frequently during those early married years, following George to his U.S. assignments and moving back to Lock Haven or Philadelphia near family when George was stationed overseas. Mary and George moved to California in 1965 when George was transferred to China Lake where they remained until moving to Las Vegas in retirement. After George died in 1989, Mary moved to Bakersfield to live closer to her sons.
Mary was very active in retirement, enjoying her volunteer work at a local senior center, her multiple weekly Bingo games, workouts at Curves Gym and time with friends. She supported her grandchildren, attending their various activities -- sports, graduations and weddings.
Family gatherings had Mom's homemade Italian donuts and deviled eggs, plus her favorite card game Skit-Skat. Dementia robbed her of her memory in recent years, but now she can rest in peace.
She is survived by her three sons; a daughter-in-law, Susan (Bob); six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
