Kimberly Jo Rutherford (maiden name: Grubb) passed away on June 25 at the age of 57 in a nursing home in Brunswick, Maine. Kim had survived for nearly a decade with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, and passed away peacefully surrounded by much of her close family.
Kim was born in Lock Haven to her mother, Loretta Grubb (formerly Kinley, now Worrick) and her father, Harry Grubb, in 1965. Though she was one of just two children, she and her brother, Jeremy Grubb, grew up in a large and lively family. She was beloved by her many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom she remained close with through adulthood. They would describe her as being bubbly and charismatic, and as having a contagiously bright and booming laugh.
Kim attended Lock Haven High School in her youth, and later Lock Haven University where she subsequently graduated with a degree in education. She took time off from teaching to raise her family as they moved around the country (Maryland, Virginia, California and Maine) and also abroad (Andaluc'a, Spain). She had three daughters, adorning them with love and devotion from the time that her first daughter was born in 1993 and on. In accordance with her husband's career as a Navy officer, the family moved around frequently, but Kim was the glue that held the family together regardless of where they went, always building a home and giving her children stability. Kim continued to engage in types of teaching whilst being a stay-at-home mother; you could always find her reading with her children, volunteering at the girls' schools or teaching Sunday school. She formally returned to teaching Special Education in Fairfax County in 2005 and excelled in this role, working in one of the top-ranked public school districts in the nation. She continued teaching in Maine once the family had settled down in the southern coastal region.
Kim was a devotedly selfless mother, daughter, sister, wife and teacher throughout her life. She is survived by her mother, Loretta Worrick; her father, Harry Grubb; her brother, Jeremy Grubb; her husband, Steven Rutherford; and her daughters, Erin, Holly and Julia Rutherford.
There will be a ceremony for friends and family mid-morning on July 15 at the Covenant United Methodist Church in Lock Haven, Pa. A Celebration of Life will follow in the Great Room at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center (Lock Haven University) from 12:30-3 p.m.
