Sadly, at the recent meeting of the Miles Township Supervisors, they put into concrete fact that the Vietnam War is long over and that those who served in harm's way and were awarded the title of "Vietnam Veteran" by the Veterans Association hold no special place in the hearts of the residents or even the so-called historians who made the original Miles Township Veterans Monument.
The Supervisors brought up the subject of replacement of the Etched Stars to show the names of who actually were Vietnam combat veterans and to distinguish them from the Vietnam era veterans who did not serve in harm's way, as I ask them to do.
Two people spoke up for the stars to be replaced.
They were told in no uncertain terms: it was a decision of the people in the community that they did not want the etched stars to be replaced. Period!
This issue is now dropped.
There were even Vietnam veterans there who did not speak up. For whatever reason, they feel that Vietnam veterans who served in combat don't need anything on the monument to show future generations.
I am sorry that the Vietnam veterans did not get their etched stars replaced, but I am only one person and since few speak out on this issue, for whatever reason, it will never be corrected.
How anyone can be this disrespectful to any veteran, much less those who served in harm's way, to not honor them on a monument correctly for their service in a war zone is beyond me. I wonder how these people can even look themselves in the mirror, much less get any sleep.
I am done with this fight! Ten plus years is long enough!
