Harry Earl Witmer, 87, of Bellefonte, passed away at home on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024.
Born on Nov. 16, 1936, in State College, he was the son of the late Oscar J. and Mary B. (Reed) Witmer. On Oct. 7, 1967, he married his beloved wife, Sara R. (Strunk) Witmer, who survives at home after sharing nearly 57 years of marriage together.
Harry was a 1955 graduate of State College High School. After school, he proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. He worked as a guard for Rockview State Correctional Facility until his retirement in 1999, after 36 years of service.
In addition to his wife, Sara, he is survived by their daughter, Ruth Ann and her husband, Dr. Bruce Posner, of Dallas, Texas; and a granddaughter, Olivia Sara Posner of New York, N.Y. Also surviving is a sister, Margaret M. Davidson, of Hartsville, S.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Oscar, John, and Claude Witmer and a brother-in-law, Donald Davidson.
Harry was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bellefonte. He and Sara enjoyed camping and traveling to various locations throughout the years together. Each year they would look forward to going to the Grange Fair and decorating their tent. He was an avid animal lover, especially dogs. Harry's family and friends could always count on finding him in the kitchen cooking something delicious, most notably his spaghetti sauce!
A devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, dependable brother and a loyal friend, he leaves his loved ones with countless memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m., at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 W. Lamb St., Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., at the church, with Canon Daniel Selvage as the celebrant and assisted by The Reverend Deacon Alex Dyakiw. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Harry's memory to St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 W. Lamb St., Bellefonte, PA 16823.
