Donald R. Nicholas

Donald R. Nicholas, 91, husband of Doris J. (Mingle) Nicholas, of State College, Pa., formerly of Montoursville, Pa., passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, Pa.

Born on Carroll Mountain near Loganton, Pa., on Dec. 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Guy S. and Rosalie (Kelly) Nicholas.

He was a 1952 graduate of the former Sugar Valley High School, Loganton, Pa., and also a graduate of the former Williamsport Technical Institute, now Penn College, Williamsport, Pa.

Donald served his country with the U.S. Army from November 1956 until being honorably discharged in November 1958.

He retired in 1999 after 33 years of service with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Montoursville office, as a draftsman and bridge designer.

Doris and Donald were wed on June 27, 1970, and shared over 54 years of marriage together.

Donald was an avid outdoorsman from a young age and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and gardening. One of his greatest pleasures was to outfit all of his grandchildren with fishing equipment on their fifth birthdays.

Along with his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert E. Nicholas (Jennifer), of State College, Pa., and Bradley L. Nicholas (Joyce), of Medford, Mass.; seven grandchildren; as well as two sisters, Marie Karstetter (Larry “Red”) and June McCaleb (Perry); a brother, Eugene Nicholas (Heidi); and a sister-in-law, Nora Nicholas, all of Loganton, Pa.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Nicholas; and a sister, Doris Pottios.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 12 p.m., at the Wayne P. Urbine Funeral Home, Inc., 95 E. Main St., Loganton, with Pastor Michael A. Hill officiating.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.

Final interment will be held at Mt. Union Cemetery, Carroll, Pa.
