"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." -- Pericles
The family of Elzner Claire Monks, of Jersey Shore, Pa., is saddened to announce the passing of Elzner on Jan. 30, 2026, at the age of 83. Elzner was surrounded by family, friends and the incredible staff at Rose View Nursing Facility as he passed peacefully into the loving arms of Christ and his beloved, Ruth (Boots) Monks, who proceeded him in death in 2010.
Elzner was born and raised in Jersey Shore, along with his sisters, Beverly Monks (deceased). Shirley Peck (deceased), Gloria Mann, of Berwick, Pa., and Victoria Ward, of Avis, Pa. Elzner loved spending time in Beulah Land, Pine Creek, Pa., with his grandparents at the family homestead, hunting, fishing and enjoying nature and the outdoors.
Elzner entered the Army at 16, and rose through the ranks to become Seargent 1/9 Air Cavalry Squadron, First Cav Division. Elzner was highly decorated for his combat service in Vietnam as a tank commander and door gunner. He especially loved his time stationed in Germany. Elzner took immense pride in serving his country and at his home he displayed numerous medals, accolades, awards, military certificates and memorabilia from his service. Shortly before his passing, the Veterans Association honored Elzner with a pinning ceremony to again thank him and acknowledge all he gave for his country.
After the military, Elzner met and married Ruth Catherine Henry, of Jersey Shore, Pa., (US Air Force), in 1969 and built a loving home having their first daughter, Robyn Monks-Gropman (Adam Gropman), of Portland, Maine, and then a second daughter, Kelly Monks (Daniel Manganiello), of Lock Haven, Pa. Elzner and Ruth were blessed with their grandchild, Levi Gropman, who they loved immensely.
Elzner and Ruth loved spending time with friends and family, playing cards, coaching softball, camping, painting and throwing parties. Big E and Boots, as they were lovingly known, are having a blast together in heaven now, watching over and looking out for us.
Elzner was a sign painter by trade and worked at Bethlehem Steel, Tetley Tea and in maintenance at the Jersey Shore Hospital.
His great love and passion was singing. Elzner had a band, Johnny and the Tornados, where he was the lead singer and where he acquired his nickname Johnny, traveling locally and singing the oldies of Elvis, Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. Even in his 80's, Elzner loved doing karaoke and his entire life he was never shy to entertain at parties, gatherings and especially at the Moose in Jersey Shore where he would belt out a tune with his son-in-law, Daniel, who became like a son to Elzner.
Elzner lived a long and interesting life as he was a genuine storyteller and his jokes were legendary. Above all, he was an amazing man, dad and friend, with a personality bigger than life itself. Elzner overflowed with love and kindness and his laugh always filled the room. He was friends with everyone and had a heart unlike any other. Every life he touched was better for it, and we are all blessed that he was a part of ours.
The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thanks to all the medical, home care and facility staff that helped him throughout the years. Your love and kindness will not be forgotten.
Elzner loved a good party, and we will be having a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 25, from 12-4 p.m., at the Moose in Jersey Shore. In his honor, we will be having Karaoke.
