John Edward Wert
John Edward Wert, 87, of Lock Haven, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2026 at Haven Skilled Rehabilitation and Nursing, Lock Haven.
Born Feb. 24, 1939 in Lock Haven, he was the son of the late Merril R. “Noah” and Mary Elizabeth Bauman Wert.
John was a 1957 graduate of Lock Haven High School.
He was married to Carol Steele Wert Walker in 1961 and together were blessed with three amazing children.
In 1983, he married his best friend, the former Opal McGhee, before her passing in 2012, following 30 years of marriage.
John was employed at PennDOT, retiring after 20 years of service.
He was a member of the Lock Haven First Church of Christ, the Lock Haven Elks Lodge and Clinton County Fire Police. John was a life member and past Chief of the Citizens Hose Company No. 5. He also served as a softball umpire for the PIAA and NCAA for many years and was well known by many for his time as Equipment Manager for the Lock Haven High School and then Central Mountain High School football programs.
John enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially at White Birch Hunting Camp, where he was a member. He was an avid fan of local football, baseball, softball and PSU wrestling.
He is survived by two sons, John E. “Skinny” Wert, II of Lock Haven and Michael Wert of Honey Brook; a daughter, Jodi Veach of Pottsville; three step-children: Margaret Pilgrim, Cathy McGhee and Terry Moyer; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-one great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Opal, and parents, John was preceded in death by a step-son, John Moyer.
A Funeral Service with Fireman’s Honors will be held on Tuesday March 3, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, Pa 17745 with Howard Hardy officiating. Burial services will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven.
Friends and family will be received at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made through the funeral home to Citizens Hose Company No. 5.
