Alice, of Young Woman’s Creek
Alice, of Young Woman’s Creek
Alice, of Young Woman’s Creek (Hurley, Davenport, Shaffer, Tarr) age 85, of North Bend, Pa., passed away on March 17, 2026.
She was born on April 28, 1940, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to the late Daniel Hurley and Barbara Hughes, and graduated from Ramapo High School in Rockland County, N.Y.
Alice had a lifelong love for culinary arts. Her love of the arts also included music, literature and self-expression. She had a long life of entrepreneurship in Western Clinton County beginning with managing Bucktail Trail Inn (formerly called the Elks Country Club) in the late 1960’s. This location was ideal for enjoying the natural beauty of Young Woman’s Creek, great food and friendship while celebrating weddings, reunions, company picnics, fly-fishing schools and seasonal hunting.
With a mindfulness toward community wellness, Alice was very community oriented in sharing her love for the outdoors through preservation of the natural beauty of the area for current and future generations. She volunteered with numerous nonprofit organizations including the Heritage Park, Youth Corp, Chapman Township and Western Clinton County Sportsman’s Association.
Alice had a passion to mentor young adults and people of all ages, too. She followed an open door policy for anyone from immediate family to the traveling hunter in need. There was always a never ending jar of cookies in her kitchen. Gingersnaps were her favorite and she enjoyed teaching family how to make them. No one ever left her home with an empty stomach.
She had a quote: “There weren’t enough people I liked. So, I made some.” This included those she mentored and, of course, the family she raised.
Alice is survived by her brother, Michael Hurley (Judith); nephew, Jacob Hurley (Carol); her children, Richard Davenport, II, Robbin Davenport (Lynn), Roland Davenport (Robin) and Jann Morton; and daughter-in-laws, Kathy Mills and Tracey Davenport; her grandchildren, Carol Taylor (Samuel), Angie Paloskey (Bryce), Amy Lauten (Jonathon), Kasandra Mann (Kyle), Richard Davenport, III (Alex Fisher), Noah Davenport (Brianne), Andrew Davenport, Audrey Davenport, Acacia Davenport and Mitchell Shady; her great-grandchildren, Corey and Dalton Paloskey, Olivia, Peyton and Alexandra Taylor, Mikah, Westyn and Malayiah Mann, Isaiah Lauten, Terra, Loch and Aerial Davenport and Oasis Davenport.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Diana Simon (Alvin); husbands, Richard Davenport, Calvin Shaffer and Kenneth “Red Man” “Pop Pop” Tarr; her son, Christopher Davenport; and nephew, Daniel Hurley.
Written by Alice: “I was blessed by my parents with the love and example of building a strong family. As my mentors in good conversation, good books, prayer and poetry, art and music, hard work and community service. I got my love of the forest, trail work, animals and history from my Dad, Daniel Hurley. I got my love of quantity cooking and entertaining, organizational and leadership skills from my mother, Barbara Hurley. It was a disappointment to her that I never had any real interest in clothes or make-up or bling. In every time and place of my life, I’ve been blessed with people who have become friends and shared in the projects, the celebrations and the tears. You might know me as Alice Hurley, Alice Davenport, Alice Shaffer, Alice Tarr or Alice from Young Women’s Creek. If you remember those times, be assured I do also, they are the bright colors in the fabric of my life. I am blessed with wonder-filled children. Christopher, second born, only stayed 11 months. I learned not to rely on the overeducated experts and to follow my own observations and do my own research when confronted with a difficult problem. That lesson is as true today as in 1960. They are great parents and as adults, my best friends; the three Davenport Knights:
Richard, the oldest, (I was 18, just married, 500 miles from home, a baby to keep me company and talk to was a good idea) our conversations still help keep the crazies at bay and brighten my day. He has nurtured many children in our little village.
Robbin, the military son, world traveler, gave me my first computer in 1988, always expands my horizons and keeps us close even living far away.
Roland, the builder, who within hours of me showing him how to do something with his hands, was better at it than I will ever be. He spends his life taking care of places and people.
There came a time when God thought I needed a daughter and Jann needed a mother. It was a very rocky road, but love does overcome all obstacles.”
A Celebration of Life will be held at North Bend Cemetery on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 1 p.m.-till…
