Gladys Houser

Gladys Houser, 89, unexpectedly passed away at her home on March 29, 2026. She was born May 2, 1936, in Halfmoon Township, Pa. Gladys was the daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Brown Waite. On Sept. 10, 1955, she married Joseph Hartle, Jr. who preceded her in death on March 1, 2012, after sharing over 56 years of marriage together.

She graduated from State College High School in 1954. Together with her husband, she owned and operated Lonely Spot Farm on Buffalo Run Road in Benner Township.

Gladys was an active 4-H leader and supporter for many years and was active in Logan Grange for seventy-five years where she enjoyed volunteering, planning and serving banquets. Gladys was an avid Penn State Wrestling fan. She was a member of St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. Gladys will always be remembered for her excellent homemade pies and sticky buns.

Gladys is survived by her five children: Linda Clapper (William), Janet Hartle (David Wiegand), Thomas Hartle (Lori), Deborah (John) Fedore, and Betsy Hoffman. She is survived by her eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Beverly Reese.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Ann Sims, and two infant grandsons.

On April 23, 2014, Gladys married Jay Houser who passed on Oct. 27, 2022. Also surviving are five stepchildren: Mary Ellen Storm (Craig), Sandra Haagen (Stephen), Karen Auman (Benjamin), Barbara Kerstetter and James Houser (Teresa). She had seven step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Her stepbrother, David Houser, also survives.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 10:00 ­ 11:00 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte. Funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m., at the church, with Father Brian Saylor officiating. The graveside service will immediately follow at Centre County Memorial Park in State College. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
