DAVID GRINE
It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of Judge David E. Grine (Ret.), who passed away Thursday, May 21, 2026. Born on March 7, 1945, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Edward and Mildred (Clary) Grine. On June 6, 1970, he married his beloved wife, Karen (Nastase) Grine, who survives at home after sharing nearly 56 years of marriage together.
David was a 1963 graduate of State College Area High School. After school, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. Upon returning home from the service, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State University. In 1973 he graduated from Dickinson Law School.
Judge David Grine served as a State College Police Officer. He also served as Centre County District Attorney from 1978 to 1981. In 1981 he began his judicial service as a Judge of the Centre County Court of Common Pleas. During his judicial tenure he served as President Judge from 2008 until his retirement in January 2012, at which time he took Senior Judge status until 2021.
In addition to his wife, Karen, he is survived by their children, Jonathan Grine (Colleen) and Kristen Grine (Eric), and four grandchildren, David, Samuel, Elsa and Jacob. Also surviving is a sister, Barbie Grine.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Janet Carson.
David was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bellefonte. He enjoyed traveling; he looked forward to going on trips with friends and taking family trips to the beach. He enjoyed going out to eat on Thursdays with his friends called “The Wing Group.” He also loved golfing and having coffee with good friends.
Judge David Grine had a gentle spirit and earned respect through his steady presence and thoughtful character. He was unpretentious with a quiet dignity and observant nature. He has left an enduring legacy of kindness and wisdom. He will be incredibly missed.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte, with Father Brian Saylor officiating.
