Rachel A. Bennett, 56, of Howard, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Born on July 15, 1969, in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late Jacob R. and Leonore J. (Fitzgerald) Shirk.
Rachel was a 1987 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School and also graduated from Centre County Vo-Tech in 1987, earning her certification in data processing. She dedicated more than 25 years of service as a price coordinator for Giant Foods in State College, where she was known for her strong work ethic and friendly nature.
Rachel was of the Christian faith and had a deep love for the outdoors. During her high school years, she excelled in girls softball and carried that same passion and energy throughout her life. She enjoyed crafting, especially making grapevine wreaths, as well as hunting and fishing. More than anything, Rachel cherished time spent with family and friends. She never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, asking for nothing in return. Her kindness, generosity and warm spirit made her a friend to all who knew her.
Rachel is survived by her life partner, Wiley A. Johnson, Jr., of Howard; her son, Trevor D. Johnson, of Howard; six brothers, Sam Shirk, of Milesburg, Ken Shirk (Shelly), of Julian, Timothy Shirk, of Bellefonte, David Shirk (Lori), of Bellefonte, Mark Shirk, of Milesburg, and Joseph Shirk (Robin), of Philipsburg; and two sisters, Dorothy Connelly (Charles), of Hollidaysburg and Florence Garrett (John), of Snow Shoe.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 68 p.m. at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Milesburg. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Alan Eckenroad officiating. Burial will follow at New Union Cemetery, Union Township.
