Dr. Charles N. Hayes

Dr. Charles N. Hayes, 89, of Lock Haven, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Born Nov. 11, 1936, in Klamath Falls, Ore., he was a son of the late Gaylord and Mildred (Quinton) Hayes.

He served in the U. S. Army from 1960-1962.

On Jan. 14, 1983, he married the former Maria D. Terneus. They celebrated 43 years of marriage together.

He enjoyed hiking, camping, traveling, chess and gardening. He was an avid reader.

Dr. Hayes received his PhD from Brown University.

Dr. Hayes retired after 44 years from Lock Haven University where he taught German and French. Earlier he taught at New York University.

Surviving is his loving wife; a nephew, Corey Hayes; a niece, Lorrie Johnson; and his Ecuadorean family, especially Andrea Blankenship and Daniela Vernille.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Hayes.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, at the Helt Funeral Chapel, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with Pastor Bill Corbin officiating. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed online at the Helt Funeral Chapel website listed below.

Friends and relatives will be received from 12:30-1 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Following the service, Maria will receive family and friends at her home.

Interment will be private.
