Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
The Scoop on Poo
MIFFLINBURG -- Some of the animals at Raymond B. Winter State Park can be quite secretive, so we don't always see them in the park. However, we often find clues that tell us who is here, where they are going or what they are doing. Join the park educator on Saturday, July 25, to learn about animals' diets by looking at their scat and how to identify who it might belong to.
As a special treat, we will also be making our own edible scat models with snacks and sweets! Please note, for those with allergies, that the foods used contain chocolate, seeds and nuts.
Meet at the Environmental Learning Center for the program which will run from 2-3 p.m.
World of Bats
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, July 25, at 8:30 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, there will be a program called "World of Bats." This program will be focusing on some of the bats' adaptations, some myths about bats and a fungus that is threatening their population. There will also be a bat count, weather permitting. Meet at the amphitheater.
Creek Critters
WATERVILLE -- On Saturday, July 25, at 3:30 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, join the park naturalist and explore an underwater community to find some different "Creek Critters" that call this creek home. Meet at the footbridge at the Lower Picnic Area.
Ghosts of Bald Eagle State Park
HOWARD -- Have you ever wondered what ghosts live at the park? Join the park naturalist on Saturday, July 25, for an eerie dusk hike to see some! Beginning at 7 p.m., at the Amphitheatre in the Modern Campground, we will also be discussing the past life of Foster Joseph Sayers. The trail is fairly flat and easy with a total walking distance of about one mile. The terrain may be wet and muddy. Please dress for the weather.
Fishing Basics
HOWARD -- Interested in fishing, but do not know where to start? Join the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist on Sunday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m., for tips and general information. We will cover basic equipment, casting, regulations and fish found in this area. There will be at least an hour (or more) left for fishing in the lake. Participants may bring their own gear or borrow the park's. All ages are welcome! No fishing license is required.
Guided Nature Walk
HOWARD -- Come with the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist on a fun, explorative hike on Monday, July 27. Beginning at 9 a.m., we will take a hike, making frequent stops to learn about the plants, animals and tracks we encounter. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring some water. It will be about 1.5-mile guided walk, about one hour, along the Foot-bridge loop for a fresh start to the week. We will meet at Hunter Run West Launch parking lot.
If you miss the morning hike, another will be held beginning at 1 p.m.
Black Bears
NORTHBEND -- On Friday, July 31, at 4 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, join the park naturalist at the table to learn more about the "Black Bears" around Pennsylvania. Topics will include adaptations, diet, and a brief overview of the natural history of the black bear within PA. This is designed to be an informal program. Feel free to stop in anytime between 4 and 5 pm. Meet at the Contact Station.
Summer Ambience Hike
NORTH BEND -- Join the Hyner Run State Park naturalist for a relaxing hike on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 3:30 p.m., on the Nature Trail to hear summer's ambience. Topics of discussion will center around what is being heard. This is designed to be an informal program. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool.
