The 250th anniversary of America's independence prompts reflection on stories of national triumphs and historical moments. The true character of a nation, however, is not found only in capital cities or on battlefields; it is found in its most basic constitutive parts: local communities and the people from which they are composed.
In reviewing the 250-year legacy of Centre County, we identified nine lessons that stand out as ways to be better individuals and community members.
1. Find the riches within
Centre County is an educational hub and a powerhouse for technical industries. This is a far cry from the once-rugged frontier tucked into the mountains in the heart of Pennsylvania. The region blossomed with the expansion of timber, iron ore and coal hidden within its ridges and valleys.
The raw materials for greatness were already in place. For the last two and a half centuries, we have worked to identify and unearth the inherent strengths and beauty of this region.
2. Find reasons to celebrate
Centre County has a skill for pausing and honoring milestones, recognizing that celebrating our heritage grounds us. Bellefonte's Victorian Christmas, Grange Fair and, yes, even State Patty's Day are examples of how Centre County finds rest and shows reverence for our culture.
Pursuing excellence is important. Joy is the fuel that drives that pursuit. Taking moments to relish victories, reflect on progress and rest are not mutually exclusive. A balance of these things makes it easier to achieve excellence, as we so often do.
3. Responsible stewardship sustains you
Natural features, like Spring Creek and Mount Nittany, are the lifeblood of the region, not just scenery. In the same way that we must rest, so too must the land. Our history relied on extracting resources, but our industries have evolved to offer some respite to the land, and many efforts are now underway to conserve and preserve it.
Longevity requires care. Protect and nurture yourself, your relationships and the environments you occupy.
4. Service is central
to success
Centre County has a longstanding tradition of service and volunteerism. Our community has been home to thousands of service members who fought in battles at home and abroad. Multiple governors from Centre County have stood at the helm of the Commonwealth, charting new paths forward with Pennsylvanians' interests in mind. To this day, we still see the benefits of hundreds of nonprofits in our community, made possible by financial and time donations.
Success is not selfish. Indeed, the greatest achievement is finding a way for your talents and efforts to serve a greater good to those around you.
5. Make and cultivate
connections
Centre County is the literal heart of Pennsylvania, but we also see this manifest in our spirit. Where others might see obstacles, Central Pennsylvanians see an opportunity to innovate to connect. Can't find a way to get lumber from east to west? Let us work some railroad magic. Not many places to stay in the middle of the state? No worries, we will arrange lodging in Boalsburg for travelers. Should we launch a small farmers' college? Sure, and let's push to make it a hub for global collaborations.
Isolation stunts progress. When we connect, build together and seek diverse perspectives, our lives become vastly richer.
6. Invite people in
When Center County opened its doors to the world, the region was completely transformed. Early on, Centre County was a stop along the Underground Railroad. Not only did we encourage people to come to or through our community, but we promised a safe haven for all. Every year, our community grows significantly as tens of thousands of students, researchers and families from around the globe venture to Penn State.
Growth and prosperity require openness. Welcoming new people, new ideas and unfamiliar experiences can be a catalyst for transformation.
7. Give generously and joyfully
One of the most notable exhibitions of generosity in the area was the donation of land to establish the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, which is now Penn State University. That donation has since become a world-class research and education institution that has sharpened the minds of millions worldwide--a gift that keeps giving.
A good second example would be when Centre County divided its land to create Clinton County. Fortunately, that land has been in pretty good hands, and they have done a pretty good job over there for a couple of centuries.
Generosity breeds a long-lasting, meaningful legacy. Be willing to share your time and resources with those around you, even if you may not see the benefit to yourself.
8. Do not be afraid to shine in quiet
The quiet grit of Philipsburg and the steady rhythm of family farms are what keep our nation running. The story of America has always been written--at least in part--here in Central Pennsylvania. It is written in the Forefathers Book Shop in Rebersburg. It gets forged in iron at Curtin Village. It rings out with every hymn sung during service at The Well church in Philipsburg. And we propose new chapters to the story with each protest chant at Allen Street Gates
Our quiet consistency and steady labor do not need a spotlight; rather, they are the beacon of light we exude. We do not need to shout to show our significance.
9. Never stop developing
Looking at the next 250 years, we cannot rest on the laurels of our past successes. Tomorrow's frontiers demand development. We will continue to expand our scientific endeavors through sensors, rejuvenate our downtowns so they can flourish, encourage tourism to let people see the splendor of Central Pennsylvania, promote education and be thought leaders in disciplines that affect everything from science to governance and democracy.
Honor who you were, celebrate who you are and never stop evolving into what you are meant to be next. You're a Central Pennsylvanian, growth and success are what we do best!
