Volunteers at Fly-In deserve our gratitude

We’re grateful for the many volunteers who make the annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven — the Piper Fly-In — possible.

This year’s event — the 35th annual — comes after last year’s was cancelled due to COVID-19.

It runs through Saturday at the Piper Museum, the William T. Piper Memorial Airport and adjoining Castanea Picnic Grounds.

Lock Haven will always be the home of Piper Aircraft and its vaunted Piper Cub — the plane that taught our pilots to fly in World War II.

Let the skies clear so they can be filled with all kinds of general aviation aircraft this week.

What a sight they are!

Welcome, all you flying enthusiasts, to the place where Piper Aircraft got its wings.

Sentimental Journey is not only about the joy of flying, it’s about Piper history.

At one time 1 out of every 90 persons in Lock Haven held a pilot’s license. In World War II, the first Piper L-4 went into combat during the invasion of North Africa.

Throughout World War II, more than 5,000 Cubs were used in training, observation, artillery-spotting, patrol, and ambulance roles and served in every campaign on every front.

Head down to Sentimental Journey, even if to just sight-see. Visit and support the museum. Watch the short-landing/take-off “competition,” check out the vendors, the famous “corn boil” and more.

And please, consider becoming a member of Sentimental Journey to help keep this historic legacy alive.

Go to the organization’s website at www.sentimentaljourneyfly-in.com/ and download a membership application.
