We support REC power plant at Renovo
Natural gas burns more cleanly than other fuels, such as oil and coal.
Because burning natural gas produces both water and carbon dioxide, it produces less carbon dioxide per unit of energy released than coal, which produces mostly carbon dioxide.
In power plants, natural gas emits 50 to 60 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than regular oil or coal-fired power plants. It also emits greenhouse gases with a lower life cycle into the atmosphere.
Yes, combustion releases methane and lowers air quality.
But natural gas is a cleaner energy vs. oil and coal. It also is abundant in our region of the Marcellus Shale. Add to those facts that the community of Renovo would benefit greatly from a natural gas-fired electric generating station and we support the project proposed by Renovo Energy Center.
Yes, let PennFuture, Clean Air Council and the Center for Biological Diversity have their say in court as they appeal REC’s plan approval for an air quality permit issued by the state Department of Environmental Resources.
It will further clarify for all parties just how much better and more energy efficient this much-needed plant will operate as it produces electricity for Pennsylvania and New York while also creating jobs and private investment for a community so hungry for — and deserving of — revitalization.
An old railyard polluted by oil and grease would see new life as REC cleans up the site to develop the plant, while adhering to all state and federal regulations, including limits on noise and building an aesthetic buffer around its perimeter.
We’re confident REC will invest in the latest technology to scrub or clean emissions from the plant so it’s safe for surrounding and nearby residents. It will monitor all emissions.
Consider this declaration from the firm:
“REC will utilize state-of-the-art emissions control technology to protect public health and the environment. The facility operations will include round-the-clock monitoring and has been designed to be one of the most efficient generating facilities of its kind. The same class of technology as that selected for Renovo set a Guiness World Record title for powering the most efficient combined cycle power plant It is expected that REC will displace existing electrical generation from older, less efficient and higher-emitting sources in the PJM electrical grid after coming online. Thus, REC’s operations can ber expected to improve air quality in this regard, as Pennsylvania continues to shift more generation away from older and higher emitting sources.”
Like First Quality’s abundant paper-making and hygienic manufacturing operations here, REC represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a beautiful mountain community nestled along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River that certainly has seen more than its fair share of economic stagnation.
