The meaning of today's holiday -- Memorial Day -- should never be taken for granted, nor should it ever be forgotten.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Take a moment today, please, and remember or say a prayer for or simply acknowledge those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and for the cause of freedom.
America is perhaps the greatest defender of freedom around the world because we value more than anything "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
Those words are enshrined in our Declaration of Independence.
As war rages in Ukraine, America has stepped up to help our courageous Ukrainian friends defend their right to freedom.
The "power of the government rests with the people."
That's a very profound statement that strikes at the heart of our Democracy.
Autocratic leadership is pervasive in our world -- people who stay in power for decades, rule with an iron first, stifle and/or literally kill the free press for their own personal benefit. We point to statements by Boris Bondarev, a Russian diplomat who quit his job and his country and unleashed a powerful statement against the leaders of Russia last week. Here is part of what he said:
"Those who conceived this war want only one thing -- to remain in power forever, live in pompous tasteless palaces, sail on yachts comparable in tonnage and cost to the entire Russian Navy, enjoying unlimited power and complete impunity. To achieve that they are willing to sacrifice as many lives as it takes. Thousands of Russians and Ukrainians have already died just for this."
No.
This cannot be just another day in America.
