A tradition like no other

Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven could use more volunteers, help to keep air under its wings

2 min read

The annual Piper Fly-In at William T. Piper Memorial Airport is underway through Saturday night, and as one of its mightiest supporters told us, changes have made the event "a more inviting and friendly fly-in."

We can't agree more with Cal Arter and the small army of people who organize, run and sustain this wonderful event that celebrates the rich history of Piper Aircraft here in Lock Haven.

Aviators and enthusiasts from all over the world visit Lock Haven, many in their colorful single engine Cubs or other models, pitching tents under their wings and enjoying a comradery few people can enjoy.

Make no mistake, pilots and visitors make sacrifices to come. This year especially, with aviation fuel hovering above $7 a gallon.

You heard that right.

Above $7 a gallon.

Central to the event is the magical Piper Aviation Museum.

We encourage everyone to visit the museum. It's filled with history -- local and national history showcasing Piper's legacy and its importance in helping to win World War II.

The Sentimental Journey helps promote Lock Haven and Clinton County to the world.

Its importance in attracting visitors from the region, state, nearby states, across our country and world cannot be overstated.

Many come into the city to spend money, helping local businesses and creating long-lasting relationships.

That is why we urge more people to step up and help the committee organize and run the event.
